Review by Larry Stein: Last night at SFJAZZ was Cindy Blackman Santana's tribute to Tony Williams Lifetime group. Many consider Lifetime the first jazz/rock group, formed in 1969. John McLaughlin was the guitarist and Khalid Yasin (Larry Young) was the Hammond B3 organist. Soon after Jack Bruce (yes, that Jack Bruce) joined Lifetime. Cindy studied under Tony and has become his main disciple, both keeping his legacy alive and in her drumming style. I don't think there are many drummers half her age (she's 63) who can keep up with her. The first set was her own group, including Felix Pastorius (Jaco's son) on bass guitar and David Gilmore on guitar (yes, different guitarist and different spelling of the last name than that other David Gilmour). Second set was the Lifetime tribute with John Medeski on keyboards (going into outer space on the B3!), Vernon Reid on guitar, and Felix on bass. Her sax player joined partway through the set as did her husband on guitar (some guy named Carlos). Great night of music! |

I don't know about anybody else but I had to take a nap... During the show we all just sat downstairs in the dressing rooms for the most part... As the show had started at 4PM it had been going for quite awhile, so we didn't really get to see any of the other acts... The guys from Los Lobos and also Robert Randolph stopped in and said hi, and I saw Jimmy Vaughn walking down the hall... You don't want to just go up to people sometimes, even though he's played with us before... Tried to take a couple of pix from the side of the stage of Eric Clapton's set just before our closing set, the production folks nixed that, they ran a tight stage... Sadly I didn't get any pix of Carlos & John together, I was too busy playing! However, I did get John to sign my Mahavishnu Orchestra songbook and also a biography that someone had written about him, and we had a brief pleasant conversation about one of his tunes that I'd learned for the show that had some specific (and a bit tricky) keyboard parts... He confirmed what I'd surmised about how it was notated for keyboard, and that he'd written the part himself, and laid it out a certain way because it was "a guitar thing"... That was cool... Unfortunately we didn't do that tune that night, though I was def ready! Anyway, it was a short run down to LA, and a short, fun gig... And I'll say say we definitely brought the fire to the party! |
