Quote from Jim Deplitch (Jan 2, 2004): While the Winterland crowd cheered on the Mahavishnu Orchestra to come back for an encore, I caught a glimpse of what appeared to be Carlos Santana standing in back of the stage equipment. I grabbed my friend's camera and bolted to an empty seating area slighlty above and behind the stage. While Carlos was warming up with some scales, I yelled something encouraging to him. He turned with a huge smile, and paused just long enough to let me get the pic before going up front. Carlos looked so happy to be there, and the fans greeted him with excitement and warmth. Another memorable night! |

(…) I wasn’t thinking of disengaging Michael Shireve from the band when he got sick, but that was what happened. (…) Shrieve leaving Santana was the band’s final step in its evolution from being a collective to being a group with two leaders to finally being a group in which I alone was in charge.
