🔔 April 20 Fri: Oakland, CA
Note from Deborah Santana (Space Between The Stars. My Journey To An Open Heart 2005): After a talk with Sri Chinmoy at the New York Meditation Center, Carlos Santana asks Deborah Sara King to marry him. (p219) The wedding ceremony takes place at Deborah King’s uncle house on Dover Street, Oakland, CA on April 20. (p223) Carlos Santana’s parents aren't invited to the ceremony, and are only informed of the wedding on the following Monday. (p226)
Quote from Carlos Santana (The Universal Tone 2014): Deborah quickly told her parents, and not long after we got back to San Francisco, on April 20, 1973, we got together at City Hall to sign the forms. Then we held a small ceremony and reception in Oakland, at SK’s brother house---he was a preacher, and he married us, too. (…) In fact, I didn’t invite anybody when I got married---no one. No family and no friends. (…) The hassle that I wanted to avoid was my mom---we were probably farther apart then than we had ever been, and we had not seen each other for a while. (…) When we had our second wedding in Queens with Sri Chinmoy, another very simple and unpretentious ceremony, Deborah persuaded me to invite my family. (…) I’d never seen my mom so hurt; I’d never seen her react that way. (p342-343)

🎧 May 2 Wed: San Francisco, CA
W/John McLaughlin
Note: Recording of "Flame-Sky" (from "Welcome").
Quote from Carlos Santana (The Universal Tone 2014): The title comes from something Sri said when I played him the song. “You’re such good boys, you and John”---he said that endearingly about us. “If you could only see how you affect the audience---both of you inflame their hearts to aspire again to be one with God.” (p345)

(left to right) Leon Thomas (vo), Tom Coster (kbd/vo), Michael Shrieve (ds), Richard Kermode (kbd), Jose "Chepito" Areas (perc), Armando Peraza (perc/vo), Carlos Santana (g/perc/vo) (seated), Doug Rauch (b/g) (seated)
Note: Leon Thomas joins the band.
Quote from Carlos Santana (The Universal Tone 2014): The big question for the Welcome album was vocals---who was going to sing after Gregg left Santana? (…) I really liked Pharoah Sanders’s album Karma, on which the song “The Creator Has A Master Plan” was sung by Leon Thomas, who sometimes liked to yodel. (…) Asking him to record and tour with us was Shrieve’s idea. (…) Leon became an important part of Santana. (p347)
Quote from Carlos Santana (The Universal Tone 2014): Actually, I’ll put it this way: in hindsight, that 1973 band---with Leon Thomas, Armando and Chepito, TC and Kermode, Dougie, Shireve, and me---was musically the best and most challenging band I’ve ever been in. (…) That lineup was the closest I think Santana ever came to being a jazz band. (p356)

🔔 June 25 Mon: Cold Bay, AK to Nagoya to Fukuoka, Japan
Note ("Lotus" album booklet): At 10:00 a.m. the Santana Band arrives at Fukuoka International Airport for their first tour in Japan. The band stays at the Nishitetsu Grand Hotel.
Quote from Ron Cuskelly & Patrick Stansfield (http://www.adastron.com/lockheed/electra/santana-electra.htm): The Sports Arena was the last gig before the jump off for N42FM to take us to Japan. The Electra flying into Japan was not really looked upon very favorably by the Japan Aviation Authorities. In fact they cleared the flight as a non-stop from Cold Bay, Alaska to Fukuoka, Japan only as a non-stop, thinking it was beyond the Electra's extreme fuel operating range. They turned out to be right, but not according to the flight plan N42FM filed to Fukuoka from Cold Bay. In fact, due to headwinds, Capt Byron A. Susan declared a low fuel emergency and landed in Nagoya to refuel in violation of his filed flight plan. In Nagoya the Electra snapped a starter motor shaft on start-up. Byron Susan simply put the hammer down on the three working engines and let the #4 drag until it essentially jump started itself. The Japan Air Controllers were not amused in any way shape or form by this. He simply denied it. Proof of the pudding was N42FM was grounded for ten days in Fukuoka while a replacement part was flown in! Thus Japan's Civil Air Authority accomplished what they had wished in the first place: i.e. that N42FM would not fly passengers or freight internally in Japanese air space!

🔔 July 14 Sat: Fukuoka, Japan to Hong Kong
Note ("Lotus" album booklet): At 11:00 a.m. travel from Fukuoka International Airport to Hong Kong Kai Tak International Airport.
Quote from Ron Cuskelly & Patrick Stansfield (http://www.adastron.com/lockheed/electra/santana-electra.htm): If I remember correctly the Electra was given a permit to ferry empty to Sapporo and make the jump non-stop directly to Hong Kong (Kai Tak) with passengers and freight on board. The amazing thing about that flight was the famous "checkerboard" (IGS 13) approach path into Kai Tak. It was a series of right angle turns, with dozens of ubiquitous Hong Kong tenement skyscrapers seemingly off either wingtip on approach!

|
🎫 July 15 Sun: The Lee Theatre, Hong Kong
Quote from Ron Cuskelly & Patrick Stansfield (http://www.adastron.com/lockheed/electra/santana-electra.htm): During the layover in Hong Kong the weather deteriorated into a full blown typhoon. The Star ferry, funicular railway, and electric trams ceased to operate. Heavy storm shutters blocked all shop windows and even the Lee Garden Hotel battened down hatches. Everything essentially was shut for two solid days. We had nothing to do but hang and drink. There being no hangar space available to shelter N42FM, it was decided to move her to Manila out of harm's way. Consequently she took off prior to the Typhoon arriving in Hong Kong. We did the shows at the old Lee Garden Theatre and audiences as I recall were so unused to Western Pop Culture that when the set was finished and Carlos walked offstage there was only silence. Carlos was somewhat puzzled and asked the promoter did they like the show? The promoter, Arthur Oh, had a few of his lads "start" the applause in the house and it rippled like wildfire through the audience. The problem did not re-occur at the second show as the audience had already been briefed and the starters were in place to "cue" the fans!

Quote from Ron Cuskelly & Patrick Stansfield (http://www.adastron.com/lockheed/electra/santana-electra.htm): I do believe the typhoon delayed the departure and resulted in the cancellation of the show in Jakarta. I do not recall landing the aircraft or doing a performance there at all.

🎫 Aug 7 Tue: Civic Theatre, Auckland, New Zealand
Quote from Ron Cuskelly & Patrick Stansfield (http://www.adastron.com/lockheed/electra-188/santana-electra.htm): Here the show is played at the Civic Theatre in downtown Auckland. Long since demolished, it featured a Venetian Gondola Orchestra platform that raised from the pit to stage level on hydraulic riser tubes. In it's lowered position it served as the Band Stage for an elaborate Dance Hall / Night Club with a grand Venetian setting and decor. The load-in was down the main aisle of the upper theatre and across a scaffolding bridge over the void between the theatre balcony front row and the stage lip; as the night club floor lay twenty odd foot below it was totally out of sight line up to the main stage! The audience sat in the "Balcony" and by the way, the planks on top of the load-in bridge were removed for onstage security!

Quote from Carlos Santana (Stuff 2013): I treasure that concert, everything felt perfect... Every time I listened to that concert over the years, I felt inspired and overwhelmed. Of all the concerts I've done in the world, I remember that one most of all. And I lost that tape.
Quote from Ron Cuskelly & Patrick Stansfield (http://www.adastron.com/lockheed/electra/santana-electra.htm): The show was performed at the modern and lively, though petite Town Hall.

🎸 Sept 7 Fri: The Aquarius, Seattle, WA
Note: Played after the Carlos Santana/John McLaughlin Band show, Carlos Santana is guest of Elvin Bishop.
(Rich Wiseman/Carlos Santana Comes Home/Rolling Stone May 6, 1976):
When the tour reached Seattle, Santana heard that Elvin Bishop was playing at the Aquarius, a cavernous beer club. He went back a long way with Bishop, to 1968 at Fillmore West, in fact, when the Paul Butterfield Blues Band with Bishop and Mike Bloomfield had “started the whole thing” for him. They were the blues band that was happening–they were so strong, they jelled so well together, they played such human, practical music that Carlos couldn’t help but be attracted to it “360 degrees-wise.”
Filled with curiosity, Santana dropped in on his old inspiration at the Aquarius after his own show. That night, Bishop was playing a more freeform style of blues, with jazz arpeggios and Indian raga-like riffs. Carlos was entranced, but not only by the music: they were having fun.
When Bishop asked him onstage, Carlos asked himself, why not? The music had put him in a happy frame and his own music hadn’t done that recently. So Santana and Bishop jammed. As Carlos became more and more delighted by the sounds they were making, he began to dance.
In the audience, another disciple of Sri Chinmoy watched, confused. Was this the same Devadip Carlos Santana who just the previous year had sworn off “earth music”–music that only moved people’s pelvises–and who had committed himself to “universal” music, which moved their souls?
The disciple wanted an explanation. After the set, he walked over to Santana and said he had expected more from his brother. In responding, Carlos found himself uttering words he realized were to comprise a new truth for him: “I think the highest form of spirituality is joy. If you don’t have that, man, then I don’t care for spirituality.”

🔔 Sept: “Dipti Nivas” Restaurant Opening. San Francisco, CA
Note from Deborah Santana (Space Between The Stars. My Journey To An Open Heart 2005): Carlos and Deborah Santana are asked by Sri Chinmoy to open a vegetarian restaurant in San Francisco, CA. (p229) During the Summer tours, Deborah Santana and Kitsaun King are starting the “divine enterprise”, located at the corner of Church and Market Streets, and named "Dipti Nivas" (the Abode Of Light). (p232) Deborah Santana: The restaurant work purified my heart, and the simple act of serving our customers balanced the life I had as Carlos’ wife. (p235)
Quote from Carlos Santana (The Universal Tone 2014): People could taste our intention and feel what we had to offer on a spiritual level. Dipti Nivas stayed popular for a long time. (p360)
Quote from Deborah Santana (https://www.deborahsantana.com/blog/community/a-banquet Nov 10, 2017): The windows onto Church Street reached twenty feet high. The J streetcar clanged to a stop at the intersection with Market Street and people walked briskly to school, work and home, often stopping to enter our vegetarian restaurant, Dipti Nivas. Lines snaked out the door at the dinner rush, customers waiting to order veggie burgers, a square of Eggplant Parmesan, a protein shake or fruit salad. I stood at the cash register wearing my sari, the required dress of the guru we followed, greeting customers as I rang up the food on their trays. I opened Dipti Nivas when I was twenty-two, my then-husband and I disciples of a guru from India whose jnana yoga included serving the world through business and teaching meditation. San Francisco’s skyline boasted the Pyramid building as one of the tallest in the City. Salesforce, Twitter, AirBNB and Google were not in our consciousnesses then. It seems like a lifetime ago that I created the menu, worked with San Francisco architect Bob Tanaka on designing the cafeteria-style dining room, and a disciple, Saumitra, built the simple wooden tables and chairs. I drove from Marin to the restaurant daily to work the 2:00 p.m. ‘til closing shift. My sister, Kitsaun, worked the early morning shift, picking up crates of fresh vegetables at the wholesale market, ordering dairy products and staples, and making bank deposits.
Quote from Sri Chinmoy (Dipti Nivas. Agni Press 1976): How can Dipti Nivas please you more? Dipti Nivas is already pleasing me in a surprising way. But, as I say, there is no end to our progress, to our achievement. Therefore, I can tell you that there are ways to please me more. All the workers of Dipti Nivas must feel that Dipti Nivas has a body, Dipti Nivas has a vital, Dipti Nivas has a mind, Dipti Nivas has a heart, Dipti Nivas has a soul.

Excerpts of several shows from the 1973 Central/South American Tour are later shown in movie theaters worldwide in the documentary “Santana En Colores”. In France, the film premieres in 1975 as “Santana. Le Rythme Du Feu”.
Note from Dick Dixon (The Santanamigos Group on Facebook May 19, 2024): These are lobby cards that were for use in movie theaters when the 1973 tour documentary came out called ‘Santana En Colores’. I have no idea how many of these there should be, or how many of each band member there actually were. But according to the background photos those missing in action are: Tom Coster, Leon Thomas, Doug Rauch, Richard Kermode and Carlos. I’ve never seen any of the missing ones and found this set back in the 90’s.

🎸 Sept 26 Wed: Ricardo’s Club, 6ª Avenida, Zone 9, Guatemala City, Guatemala
Note: At the end of the Santana show, one of the promoters invites the band for some drinks at a local bar managed by Julia Zardeto and Jorge Palmieri. The club is owned by American Richard Aoun who invited the band to play in the country. The club’s band starts to play several Santana’s songs, and Carlos Santana and Jose “Chepito” Areas play with them eventually.

What do I remember? Carlos dressed all in white, with short hair... A lot of jazz, something new to my young ears.... And the big mirror in the background...

Quote from Jim Deplitch (Dec 31, 2003): It was Thirty Years
Ago Today
. December 31, 1973. Dave the drummer and I, a 16-year-old bass player, had tickets to see Santana at Winterland in San Francisco, on
New Years Eve 1973. Transportation was a problem as neither one of us had access to a car, or the money to take the bus. Under a cold and cloudy
sky, we had about a forty-mile journey from Palo Alto north to San Francisco, so we decided to hitchhike up HWY 101. Once we got to the freeway ramp, as
soon as we stuck out our thumbs it started raining. Even with fair skies, San Francisco can feel like one of the coldest places on earth this time
of year. Having to hitch a ride home after the show wouldnt be a picnic either. But hey, I was about to see Santana for the first time, and I
wasnt gonna let a little rain stop me. Just before we got thoroughly soaked, this multi-colored VW van pulled over, driven by a guy that reminded
me of Cat Stevens. I think he called himself Keefer. He explained that he lived in San Francisco, and offered to take us right to Winterland.
Wow, what a break! As we approached the city, the rain was really coming down. Keefer suggested that if we had trouble getting a ride after the show,
that we could call him later and he'd pick us up. What a guy!! (Some people were so nice back then) At Winterland: Several bands were on the slate, so
Ill fast-forward past the forgettable opening acts, with the exception of Journey, who was scheduled to go on just before Santana. Before this night,
the band called Journey was completely unknown to me. Some of the locals gave us a rundown, explaining that Journey included former
members of Santana and that this was their first live performance. People were speculating what kind of music Neal Schon and Gregg Rolie was going
to come out with. Journeys debut had hints of the old Santana band sound without the percussion. Neal and Gregg looked like they had something
to prove and made an impact with the crowd right away. My first impression of Neal Schon was that he came across as like an egotistical Carlos Santana
impersonator, based on his playing style and facial expressions. I remember that Dave and I agreed that Journey was a hot act and would be worth seeing
again. The crowd was getting noticeably toasted by this time, offering Journey loud intoxicated cheers of approval. After Journey finished, there was a
rumor going around that Schon and Rolie would appear with Santana at the end of the night to do Song of the Wind. Ironically, minutes
later, Song of the Wind began playing over the PA as a clue that Santana would soon be taking the stage. It sounded so good through the sound
system, and I started getting excited, realizing that Carlos would be playing live, right in front of me. The wait was over, Winterland went completely
dark, and the pleasant fragrance of incense cut through the smoky air. From the right side of the stage, out of the shadows, appeared a smiling Carlos
wearing all white with his hair cut short. When the spotlight found him, the finish of his red and orange sunburst Les Paul gleamed and looked ready
to take off. This was a beautiful sight. Carlos checked his volume knob, and then played a few quick bursts of melodic notes, using his trademark
tone. The adrenaline hit! There was no doubt that I was in the presence of greatness. Next, Carlos requested a moment of silence for prayer. This felt
like an awkward moment as a few people refused to quiet down. Not respecting his wishes seemed so rude. Slowly, the dynamics of the music built with
intensity, and the band already sounded far sophisticated above the previous acts. I was on sensory overload panning across the stage, seeing Carlos,
Mike Shrieve, Doug Rauch, Armondo Perraza, Chepito, Tom Coster, etc, realizing that, wow, what a lineup they have! Focusing on Carlos, his guitar intensity
and tone was incredible. It was loud enough to be heard over the band, but melodic to the ear. His lead passages were like beams from heaven, piercing
and soaring through the clouds of the Winterland smoke. As a bass player, I was also glued to watching Doug Rauch, knowing that he had a style and
presence that completely inspired me. I remember, however, feeling a little saddened not hearing Gregg Rolies voice on Black Magic Woman
and Time to See the Sun. As the set progressed, the crowd became more and more obnoxious as loud demands for Evil Ways and the
blowing of noisy air horns escalated to a major distraction. It became clear that Dave and I were in the minority for cheering Carlos new material
and welcoming his message of spirituality. The majority of the audience was indulging in drugs, alcohol, cultural intolerance, and resistance to
enlightenment. Well into the set, Carlos paused to address the crowd and said something about sensing all the pain in the audience, and that he would
cry for them. He even said hed play all night if you want me to. I was thoroughly impressed by Santanas courage and compassion,
the way he tried to reach a hostile crowd that was not open to receiving his words of kindness. The situation got uglier, as a few fights broke out
close to where we were standing. After Santana played their last song and left the stage, Dave and I worked our way over to the nearest exit. I could
be wrong, but I dont remember them doing an encore. The rumored reunion of Carlos, Gregg, and Neal was obviously not going to happen and at this
point of the night, I was more concerned about getting out of there safely. Strangely, I dont remember the New Year being welcomed in or at what
part of the show that it happened. It was now 1974, the house lights are on, and Santana is gone. Heading out the door with the crowd into the cold
and damp San Francisco night air, I was pre-occupied with getting ourselves back to a freeway ramp-heading south. While glancing toward the traffic on
Geary Street, someone yelled from a passing car, How was Carlos? and Dave joyously replied Beautiful, man! Although I was feeling
unsafe, this helped me put things back in perspective. Carlos WAS incredible, and we got to see him! Before this night, I had just recently started getting
into his music, and after this night, Carlos was a hero to me as a person, musician and gave me total inspiration I would take from that night forward.
Walking south on Geary Street, the reality hit that we had a ways to go and would probably freeze our butts before reaching the 101-freeway entrance
toward San Jose. The citys thick fog and unfriendly streets reinforced that we were a long way from Palo Alto. It was time to find a phone booth
and get a hold of the Cat Stevens guy who dropped us off. We frantically rifled our pockets for his number, found it, and made the
call. True to his word, Keefer was a welcome sight when he eventually showed up in his VW van. He invited to take us to a local neighborhood coffee shop
that was crowded with colorful crazy people hanging out after hours. The San Francisco glitter thing was happening in those days and this restaurant
was quite a stage for costumes. Over coffee and French fries, we finally had an opportunity to relax and inform Keefer about what we had just experienced
at Winterland. We were relieved when our generous host suggested we sleep where-ever you can find a spot at his apartment. Even better,
he offered to give us a ride back to Palo Alto the next day! I was thinking that night that God was truly looking out for us. Winding through the dark
San Francisco neighborhoods, Dave and I entered the next chapter of weirdness as Keefer parked along side a run down Victorian apartment building that
he called home. Beginning with the lobby area, this looked like something youd associate with the Grateful Deads Mars Hotel. We were treated
to walls painted different fluorescent colors, strange murals of giant human figures and brightly painted utility pipes running along the ceiling and
walls. Thoroughly cold and exhausted, we climbed up an Alfred Hitchcock looking staircase, entered an apartment, side stepped two people having
sex on the floor, continued down a dark hallway, and entered another dimly lit room with old floor lamps and some furniture. In the background, Lucy
in the Sky with Diamonds was playing on the radio. With the sofa already occupied, I sat awake, sitting up in a stuffed chair with one eye open. I
was still reminiscing about the Santana concert while looking out the window at the sky getting lighter over the rooftops. I previously thought the
Height-Ashbury psychedelic thing was dying out, but it still seemed alive and well on January 1st of 1974. The next morning, Keefer dropped me off
at my doorstep. I returned to the familiar comforts of my bedroom, played Caranvanserai on the turntable, practiced my bass and wrote about what Id
just experienced. A few days later, I found Keefers wrinkled up phone number in my jacket and dialed his number to say thanks again.
His phone was disconnected. This was a strange and surreal experience, and maybe a fitting way to begin my years of being a Santana fan. God truly watches out for us.
