🎸 Jan 22 Sat: Winterland, San Francisco, CA
Note: Carlos Santana, Dave Mason are guests of Traffic for 15 min. on: Gimme Some Lovin’.
Quote from Corry Arnold (May 23, 2022): Besides being all-in-all awesome, I believe this marks the only time that Carlos played with the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section (the Swampers) who were part of Traffic for that tour (Roger Hawkins, David Hood, Barry Beckett), but I'm not 100% on that detail.

♥ Jan: Santana #11 ("Caravanserai" Recording Band)
Carlos Santana (g/perc/vo), Tom Rutley (b), Doug Rauch (b/g), Michael Shrieve (ds), Jose "Chepito" Areas (perc), James "Mingo" Lewis (perc), Armando Peraza (perc/vo), Rico Reyes (perc/vo), Gregg Rolie (kbd/vo), Tom Coster (kbd/vo), Neal Schon (g)
Note: Gregg Rolie and Neal Schon still record with the band in the studio, but are no longer touring members. Rico Reyes and Tom Rutley leave just after the recording of "Caravanserai". Doug Rauch, Tom Coster and Armando Peraza join the band.
Quote from Carlos Santana (The Universal Tone 2014): When Dougie came in on bass, and with Mingo on the congas, it was a whole new kind of rhythm---more flexible and looser. That really was when I started to feel that maybe Santana could go in a different direction, one that would be evident on our fourth album, Caravanserai. (p293)
Quote from Carlos Santana (The Universal Tone 2014): For me, Armando Peraza was the most important person to come into Santana that year---maybe any year. (…) Armando was an amazing spirit and force in the band. For me, he became a mentor and a tutor and a divine angel. (p306)

Quote from Carlos Santana (The Universal Tone 2014): When we were finished with Caravanserai, Clive Davis asked for a meeting at CBS’s Studio. It was just Clive, Shrieve, and I. Clive was definitely not happy. (…) I had too much respect for Clive, so I said, “Clive, thank you for coming here and saying what you needed to tell us. You need to do what you need to do, and we need to do what we need to do. But we can’t be doing another ‘Black Magic Woman’ over and over. We can’t go back---with all the changes in the last few months, we literally cannot go back. We have to learn to change and to grow.” (...) Bill Graham was kind of like that, only he would be straight without pulling any punches. When he heard what the title was going to be, he said, "Caravanserai? More like career suicide." 🔔 Oct: Mill Valley, CA
Note from Deborah Santana (Space Between The Stars. My Journey To An Open Heart 2005): Carlos Santana announces to Deborah King that John McLaughlin wants to record with him (p143). He introduces her to Mahavishnu Orchestra’s music with the album “Birds Of Fire” which back cover features a poem written by Sri Chinmoy. He also says that Larry Coryell, another guitarist who stayed at his house the year before, is a disciple of Sri Chinmoy (p144). Carlos Santana asks Deborah King to join him in New York, NY during the recording sessions with John McLaughlin (p144).
Quote from Carlos Santana (The Universal Tone 2014): Here’s how it happened: just before the Caravanserai tour began, John called me about doing an album with him. (…) If he plays up and down the neck, quickly and staccato, answer him slowly, with longer notes, and it’s going to be a beautiful contrast. (p318-319)

🔔 Oct Last Week: Meeting Guru Sri Chinmoy. New York, NY
Note: Carlos Santana and Deborah King meet guru Sri Chinmoy.
Note from Deborah Santana (Space Between The Stars. My Journey To An Open Heart 2005): Carlos Santana and Deborah King meet John McLaughlin and his wife Eve, both Sri Chinmoy’s devotees (p145). They own a restaurant to “feed people’s souls as well as their bodies”. (p150) Through John McLaughlin and his wife, Sri Chinmoy invites Carlos Santana and Deborah King to his United Nations Chapel for meditation. (p153) While Carlos Santana is in the studio recording with John McLaughlin, Deborah King helps at the restaurant, and becomes interested in Sri Chinmoy’s teachings. (p169) For her, this new spiritual path can represent a way to God’s forgiveness. (p173) Carlos Santana is healed from the anger at the breakup of his band, and feels he can complete his quest for light. (p175) Around October 26, Sri Chinmoy personally invites Carlos Santana and Deborah King to become his disciples. (p175) They both accept. Carlos Santana asks Deborah King to join him for the upcoming European tour. (p176) Carlos Santana gets his hair cut short in Greenwich Village. (p177) He starts dressing in white clothes. Deborah King: "God was now our daily communion, Sri Chinmoy our guide." (p178) They both become disciples during a ceremony held at Sri Chinmoy’s house. (p179) Sri Chinmoy: “I offer you my highest love and gratitude for the service you will offer the Supreme through me.” (p180)
Quote from Carlos Santana (The Universal Tone 2014): That last week of October, John and Eve took Deborah and me to meet their guru for the first time. (…) The meeting was at the Church Center for the United Nations, across the street from the main UN Buildings. (…) The inner voice said, “You are a seed. A seed needs sun, water and soil. Together you will be able to grow and give divine fruit to humanity.” (…) By the time I opened my eyes, I knew Sri’s teaching was meant to be my path. Sri could see that, too. There was no contract to sign or handshake or anything like that. There was no official welcome---just Sri standing in front of me, smiling and saying, “I take you; I accept you. If you want, I take you as my disciple. But you got to cut your hair and shave your beard.” (p320-321-322)

🎧 Oct-Nov 2 Thu: Recording of "Love Devotion Surrender" (Carlos Santana's 2nd solo album). New York, NY
Note: Also recorded: "Love, Devotion & Surrender" (from "Welcome") W/Wendy Haas.
Note from Deborah Santana (Space Between The Stars. My Journey To An Open Heart 2005): End of “Love Devotion Surrender” recording sessions on November 2. One of Sri Chinmoy’s poem is called “Love, Devotion And Surrender”, and Carlos Santana feels this title represents his spiritual journey. (p181)
Quote from Carlos Santana (The Universal Tone 2014): The Caravanserai tour across the United States and Canada didn’t last long---it ended with a few shows around New York City at the end of October. Deborah met me there, and then McLaughlin and I went into the studio with our respective rhythm sections. (…) John and I would get together again in early ’73 to finish the music for the album. In the end we called it Love Devotion Surrender, which was the spiritual path of Sri Chinmoy. (p319-320)

🔔 Nov 3 Fri: New York, NY
Note from Deborah Santana (Space Between The Stars. My Journey To An Open Heart 2005): Carlos Santana and Deborah King travel to London, UK for the upcoming European tour (p181). Carlos Santana announces to his band that he has joined Sri Chinmoy’s path. Michael Shrieve: Whoa. That’s drastic (p182).
Quote from Carlos Santana (The Universal Tone 2014): Then almost immediately we had to leave New York and join Santana in London for the start of a European tour. When the band saw me they were shocked. (p323)

Quote from Thomas Parpart (The Santanamigos Group on Facebook July 20, 2024): November 11, 1972, The Caravanserai Tour at Frankfurt Festhalle. I was 17 years old, and it was my first concert. I entered the venue at 7:55, and the show started at 8:00. I didn’t know very much about Santana, but I got "infected" for the rest of my life. I had to leave at 11:30 to catch the last train, and the band was still playing. That never happened again…
