(left to right) Bob “Doc” Livingston (ds), Gregg Rolie (kbd/vo), Michael Carabello (perc), David Brown (b), Carlos Santana (g/perc/vo)
Note: Michael Carabello is coming back to the band, replacing Marcus Malone.
Quote from Carlos Santana (The Universal Tone 2014): A few days before we left, Stan said he had to tell me something. Marcus was in jail---for murder. (…) We had to think fast---Carabello had stopped playing with the band, but he was still hanging out with us. He knew all the songs and the parts, so the decision was easy. (p202)

🎫 March 7 Fri: Basketball Court, James Lick High School, San Jose, CA
Quote from James Bettencourt (June 2, 2010): My friend Jamie called Bill Graham (promoter and Fillmore owner), and asked for Santana to play. Bill asked how much the student body had as a budget, and Jamie told him we had $2,500.00. Bill laughed and said “no way”, Jamie said “thank you, we will get someone else”. Bill called back within about 10 minutes, and said “OK, you can have them and the three other groups for that price”! Keep in mind Santana’s first album was not yet out or just released at that time, and they were not a major player on the U.S. scene, except for the West Coast. Anyway, the school barely broke even money wise on the event, and after the concert a single wine bottle was found on the basketball gymnasiun floor where it was held. The Dean of the school said they would never do this again! A major scandal for the school!

🎫 March 8 Sat: Washington High School, Fremont, CA
Quote from Tim Curley (Sonoma Index-Tribune May 6, 2021): They unloaded their gear into the old "Hoosiers"-like gymnasium, and the place was never the same. Social studies teacher Mark Mattingly, now 78, was one of the chaperones that night. "There were joints being passed around, drinking going on, sex in the bleachers," Mattingly recounted via a phone call from his home in Fremont, all factors that kept him busy that night. Rest assured this writer, although in attendance, knew nothing about such goings on. The action on the stage kept Mattingly busy, too. They were to stop at 11 p.m., but didn’t. They were told again to stop. They didn’t. Eventually, Mattingly dramatically cut the power to the stage. Carlos and the boys just grabbed all the percussion instruments they had and kept playing. "They kept going and going and going," Mattingly said.

♥ Mid-March: Santana #3
Carlos Santana (g/perc/vo), David Brown (b), Johnny Rae (ds), Michael Carabello (perc), Gregg Rolie (kbd/vo)
Note: Bob “Doc” Livingston is replaced by Johnny Rae.
Quote from Carlos Santana (The Universal Tone 2014): We went in and started rehearsing some new tunes, but nothing was coming together at first. This was when we decided to let Doc Livingston go---he kind of fired himself, really. Gregg asked him to leave, then we had a jazz drummer, Johnny Rae, with us for a few gigs---he played often with Cal Tjader and Gabor Szabo. (p206)
Quote from Michael Shrieve (Facebook March 26, 2020): When I was in high school, I would take a train every morning from Redwood City to Mountain View. My Mom was a nurse and, while still dark, she would drop me off at the train station. I loved the train, and still do. But every once in awhile, after she would leave, I would take the train in the opposite direction, to San Francisco. There was a Drum Shop there that was called Drumland and for a high school kid into the drums, it was intoxicating. It was owned by a great guy named Kenny Williams. One of the people that worked at the shop was drummer John Rae, and he was super nice to me. I was in awe of the folks that would come in there because they wore working professional drummers, who would just hang out and shoot the shit. Johnny Rae played with Cal Trader and I thought that was just SO cool.

♥ Early April: Santana #4
Carlos Santana (g/perc/vo), David Brown (b), Michael Shrieve (ds), Michael Carabello (perc), Gregg Rolie (kbd/vo)
Note: Johnny Rae is replaced by Michael Shrieve.
Quote from Carlos Santana (The Universal Tone 2014): One day I saw Michael Shrieve come into Pacific looking to get some studio time for his band. He was a drummer I knew who hung with some of the guys in Jefferson Airplane, so I invited him to jam with us. (…) We kept playing into the night. (…) We felt a chemistry right off the bat. We asked Michael to join the band almost immediately, and he said yes. (…) Santana had its first stable lineup together, the one the world would get to know from our first three albums---Gregg, David, Carabello, Michael, Chepito, me, and a few people we added later. (p207-208)
Michael Shrieve’s partial speech at the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Induction. (Waldorf-Astoria, New York, NY January 12, 1998): (…) But, one night I was visiting a recording studio that I used to frequent to try to hustle free studio time for my own group. I’m walking in the front door and the drummer from Santana is walking out. I go inside and Santana was in the studio recording their first album for Columbia and Clive Davis, and they had just had a big falling out with their drummer! A couple of the guys recognized me from a year ago and asked me if I’d like to jam. Well, we jammed. We played all night long and at the end of the night we all gathered in a small room off to the side. Actually, I think it was just Carlos, Gregg, and I. Carlos asked me if I would like to join the band. I said, “You know, let me check my schedule.” Just kidding! That night they followed me home and I went into the house and woke my folks up and said, “See you later. This is where I get off.” I ran out to the street, jumped into the car and drove up to San Francisco’s Mission District where the band was living in a house together. I took my appropriate place on the couch and, despite the excitement and because of the late hour, fell asleep. I was in the band. And what a band it was! I soon saw this was no peace, love, hippie thing. This band was like a street gang and its weapon was music. (…)

♥ Early May: Santana #5
(left to right) Michael Shrieve (ds), Carlos Santana (g/perc/vo), Gregg Rolie (kbd/vo) (bottom), Jose “Chepito” Areas (perc), David Brown (b), Michael Carabello (perc)
Note: A second percussionist joins the band, Jose “Chepito” Areas. This is the first Santana lineup to have an album released.
Quote from Carlos Santana (The Universal Tone 2014): Carabello used to go to the beach and play there with whoever was hanging out. While we were waiting to find out what was happening with Marcus, Carabello met a guy who played percussion and was part of a group called the Aliens. (…) The guy, Jose Areas, played congas on one tune, then timbales on another---then soloed on trumpet, too! He was incredible. (…) He was from Nicaragua and kind of small, and they called him Chepito. (…) By the time Santana went back to the studio in May for a second try, Chepito was part of the band. (p204-205)
Quote from Michael Carabello (Interview by J. Rudy Ramirez 1996): Michael reported leaving the early Santana Blues Band due to a dispute with the other members, who wanted to continue to play while Carlos was in the hospital with tuberculosis. A flashy conga showman named Marcus Malone was brought in to replace Michael and continued with the band even after Carlos’ recovery. Marcus’ later arrest for manslaughter would open the door for Michael’s return, but he felt insecure and nervous trying to find a way to compensate for Marcus’ crowd-pleasing flair. The answer came to him at a percussion jam near San Francisco’s Ocean Beach. As Michael describes it, “One Sunday I was out at Playland at the Beach, on Great Highway, playing congas with two other guys. You know, somebody always comes along and wants to play your drum.” “So this guy comes up and asks me if his friend could play and I said ‘Sure,’ and this guy sits down and plays some shit I had never heard. That was Chepito.” Impressed by the new guy’s playing at the jam session, Michael went to see him perform at the Nite Life Night Club on San Bruno Avenue with The Aliens, a Top 40 band. There was “Chepito,” (José Areas, a recent immigrant from Nicaragua,) on stage, alternating between congas, timbales, and trumpet…Michael was further blown away, as were Carlos Santana and Gregg Rolie on a subsequent visit, and Chepito was invited to join Santana. The merging and blending of Michael and Chepito’s percussion styles proved to be very potent, and became a major strength of the Santana band, as did their input into the band’s arrangements and repertoire. One of Michael’s contributions was his insistence that Santana record Tito Puente’s song “Oye Como Va,” which became one of their biggest hits.

🎧 May 4 Sun-May 8 Thu: Pacific Recording, San Mateo, CA
Note: Recording of "Santana" (Santana’s 1st album).
Quote from Carlos Santana (The Universal Tone 2014): We decided to use Pacific Recording Studio---a new facility in San Mateo that also had rehearsal space. (…) Then it all seemed to come together. We figured out how to get the sound we wanted on each instrument. Day by day, each song sounded better. Gianquinto helped us eliminate wasted hours and figure out how to make the jams shorter---showing us how one section of a song went into the next and how to not lose the flow. (…) We recorded the first album in five days. It took a little longer to mix it---we didn’t get everything right, and we didn’t feel like it captured our sound perfectly yet---but it was close and was much better than the LA session. (…) I picked out the cover for the album---I wanted to use the poster for the show we played at the Fillmore West with the Grateful Dead and the Staple Singers, so the artist Lee Conklin designed it again, and it really worked. When our first album came out, my favorite thing on the cover was the line “Produced by Brent Dangerfield and Santana.” (p206-207-208)

🔔 May 25 Sun: 2nd Annual Northern California Folk-Rock Festival. Santa Clara County Fairgrounds, San Jose, CA
Note: Carlos Santana attends Jimi Hendrix’s show.
Quote from Carlos Santana (Straight Ahead June 1994): The first time I saw Jimi was at the Santa Clara Fairgrounds in San Jose. It was probably the most incredible concert I ever heard in my life. I have never heard him play better after that. The show was absolutely incredible. Jimi was at the peak of his art, at one moment he would get caught inside a proton or a neutron and the next minute he would throw you to the Milky Way. I've never been exposed to that drastic form of expression. Somebody actually recorded it that day. I listen to it and I'm still blown away. You can hear all these waves of spirits crying through his guitar. We were like - 'Oh my God! How can he do this?' It was scary, I had never heard anybody express electric music the way he did that day. It was incredible to be assaulted with all these screaming winds. He would really control that instrument like a jazz player or a blues player would. It was like controlling a demon and making it sing.
Quote from Carlos Santana (UniVibes No 17 Feb 1995): I saw him at Santa Clara Fairgrounds in San Jose in '69 but I didn't get to talk to him then - I still didn't know him. I think that was the best concert that I ever heard him play. He had supreme confidence that day. There was nothing in his mind about business of chicks or anything that I could tell because he just came out like Michael Tyson, when Michael Tyson would knock guys [out] in 3 seconds. There's a certain 'stance'. That's what Miles Davis said: 'I can tell whether a person can play just by the way he stands, you know.' He had a certain stance, man. He was all over that Strat and had supreme confidence, that's all I can say.
Quote from Carlos Santana (The Universal Tone 2014): I saw him around seven times total, and that night was great. But no Hendrix show topped the one I heard him do at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds in San Jose in ’69. I never heard him do better. (p260)

🎫 June 10 Tue: Graduation Dance. High School Gym, Palo Alto, CA
Quote from Corry Arnold (http://rockprosopography101.blogspot.com/2010/02/june-16-1967-cubberley-high-school.html): According to the June 5, 1969 Catamount, Cubberley High’s Newspaper, Cubberley and Gunn held a joint Graduation Dance at Frontier Village, featuring Cold Blood. The joint Grad Dance appears to be due to poor attendance, a very 60s phenomenon. This is worth noting, however, since it suggests that considerably fewer people saw Santana’s performance at Paly than have claimed to do so. Paly’s 1969 graduation had Santana, two months before Woodstock, but after they had begun recording their classic first album. This was the event in Paly’s history that no class could ever top. Paly had the oldest facility at the time, so its not surprising it was not widely used for public events, compared to the newer High Schools.

🎫 June 14 Sat: The Fun House, South Lake Tahoe, NV
Quote from Corry Arnold (http://rockprosopography101.blogspot.com/2010/10/sons-of-champlin-performance-list_29.html): The date has been approximated from the Santana timeline. Its not clear if the bill was for one or two nights. Based on the Santana timeline, the show (or shows) was somewhere between June 1 and June 14. Various eyewitnesses (including Charlie Kelly) remember a hot set by Santana, and then the Sons being shut down by the cops because of "suspicious activities". However, Jim Burgett, who promoted the show, recalls few problems with the police and suspects that any band who was shut down would simply have been running overtime.

Quote from Carlos Santana (The Universal Tone 2014): Bill called a meeting for everyone in the band. It was sometime in July 1969. He was living in Mill Valley then. (…) We all went over, looking at the houses---he had put together a nice outdoor buffet for us. We were all impressed. Then he sat down and told us why we were there. (…) “I’m sending you guys to the East Coast, and when you come back everything will be different. (…) “The festival in Woodstock is going to change everything for Santana. After that, people are going to recognize you everywhere, and it will totally fuck up your head.” (p211-212)

Quote from Dick Dixon (Oct 8, 2023): Even though artist Lee Conklin has been creating poster art for over 50 years, he may be most known for the image used on the cover of Santana's first album. What many people don't realize is that the album cover was actually the second time he'd drawn that image, and it was slightly different from the first one which had been done a year earlier to promote shows at the Fillmore on Aug 27-28-29, 1968. It was shortly after these concerts that Lee got a visit from Carlos and David Brown, who both told him they wanted to use the picture for the first Lp, so he redrew it and changed it just slightly. He added more detail to the faces, figures and surrounding area and even found room to add an extra face into the design. The album version was later used for posters advertising shows in 1970. When I spoke with the artist in the 90s, he didn’t recall giving permission for that image to be used for any concert posters, but Bill Graham being Bill Graham, well you know...

Note: Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young were forced to postpone the show after Christine Hinton (Crosby's girlfriend) was tragically killed in a car accident, thereby opening the stage to Janis Joplin and Santana who stepped in to replace them along with the original billing of Blues Image and former Lovin’ Spoonful John Sebastian. The poster had already gone to print despite the scheduling change.
